Welcome to the TLS Instructional Resource Page. We hope this site will help you locate and benefit from resources related to curriculum, instruction, and professional learning.

The instructional priorities in Franklin Pierce Schools are known as the Unifying Practices. Built from the frameworks of Culturally Responsive Practice, Universal Design for Learning, and Standards-based Instruction, the six unifying practices describe the conditions for learning we aspire to in every classroom. The Practices, along with a companion reflection guide, top our resources to express their priority as names in our FPS Strategic Plan.

FPS Student Portrait:

What does a Franklin Pierce Schools graduate look like? How are our students' experiences in FPS unique? Over the course of the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years, families, students, staff, and community members were asked to help us define what it means for students to thrive on their paths to graduation and beyond. Trends in these responses shaped the development of the Franklin Pierce Schools Student Portrait - an articulation of six actions we want to cultivate in students all along their path in our schools. These actions, when assumed by staff and community members, too, set a model for and contribute to conditions that support our students in developing these same capacities. Franklin Pierce students will:

Contribute toward healthy and just communities
Collaborate effectively
Connect across differences
Learn with Curiosity and humility
Create solutions
Nurture self, others, and community

The State Board of Education has created a Washington State Graduate Profile. The FPS Student Portrait supports these outcomes.

Students' learning experiences in FPS classrooms will support the development of these capacities.

Multilingual Learners (MLL)

Dual Language

In the FPS Dual Language Program students whose first languages are Spanish or English grow collaboratively to reach high levels of academic achievement in both Spanish and English; develop the ability to speak, read and write in Spanish and English within all academic subjects; and gain cross cultural skills leading them to value rich multicultural environments. The Dual Language Program is offered at Harvard Elementary School and Ford Middle School.

School Improvement Planning (SIP)

Beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, the FPS SIP process shifted to a short-term cycle of improvement grounded in an equity challenge.

The revised 90-day School Improvement Plan process consists of three phases:

Explore: Based on an identified equity challenge related to students' learning experiences, staff gather "street data" to listen/hear/see, uncover and reimagine new ways of being in service of students and families.

Engage: Given new possibilities surfaced in the explore phase, staff construct an action plan to shift the experience of students. SIP teams monitor implementation of the plans with a regular cadence of review and adjust actions based on feedback and formative data.

Extend: At the conclusion of a cycle, SIP teams consider how to sustain new practices and how to apply new learnings to other areas of focus.

This process is intended to shift HOW we do our work, in alignment of our district emphases on social justice and equity, family engagement, and improvement of instruction. Key shifts are noted in the table above. See also:
