Pertussis

What is Pertussis? Pertussis is a contagious, bacterial illness. You may have also heard it called "whooping cough". This is due to many people developing a cough with a "whoop" sound when infected. 

How do people get Pertussis? Pertussis is very contagious, and is spread by respiratory droplets. The infection can last many weeks, and may just seem like a cold with a cough. 

How can we prevent Pertussis? The best way to prevent pertussis is to get vaccinated. Most people are vaccinated as babies, before kindergarten entry, and before 7th grade entry. Adults should try to be vaccinated about every 10 years. 

If I get Pertussis, what do I do? You will need to see a health care provider and have a lab test to diagnose pertussis. If diagnosed, you will be advised to stay home and complete a 5-day medication treatment.
