Military Families

Eligibility for Transfer and Enrollment

• Enroll in school immediately using unofficial records if official ones are delayed.
• Official records must be transferred within 10 business days.
• Schools cannot charge excessive fees for record copies.
• Guardianship documents, special powers of attorney, or custody orders are enough to enroll a student.
• Schools cannot charge tuition for military children living with a non-custodial parent.

Application for Transfer and Enrollment

• Immunization records must be provided within 30 days of enrollment.
• Kindergarten & First Grade students can stay in the same grade if transferring mid-year.
• Public schools must accept military transfers regardless of state age requirements.
• Proof of residency and school records are required for enrollment.

Waiver Requirements

• Schools can waive certain graduation requirements if similar coursework was completed.
• Additional graduation requirements (like service hours or projects) may also be waived.

Exit Exams

• Schools must accept exit exams from the sending state if available.
• Alternative assessments can be used if the required exams aren’t available.

Transfers During Senior Year

• Seniors may graduate from their previous school if they meet those requirements.
• Schools will work to ensure on-time graduation if requirements differ.

Course Placement

• Students are placed in courses based on their previous records and assessments.
• Schools may re-evaluate placement but must ensure timely enrollment.

Program Placement

• Gifted, ESL, and other program placements must be honored if previously enrolled.
• Evaluations may be done to confirm placement but cannot cause delays.

Special Education Services

• IEPs and 504 Plans must be followed according to federal law.
• Schools must provide equivalent services until further evaluation is completed.

Placement Flexibility

• Schools may waive prerequisites to allow students to continue coursework.

Absences for Deployment

• Students may receive excused absences for military-related events.

Eligibility for Extracurricular Participation

• Military children can participate in activities even if deadlines have passed.
• Schools should make reasonable efforts to ensure access to extracurriculars.
