English Language Learners (ELL)
Franklin Pierce Schools are enriched by the growing diversity of our students. Students have been enrolled from more than fourteen countries and speak languages including Spanish, Russian, Korean, Moldavian, Tagalog, Arabic, Cambodian, Ukrainian. Chinese, Khmer, Philippine, Vietnamese, and Hindi. Our goal is to support students' academic progress and assist bilingual students and their families in feeling welcome in our schools.
When a Home Language Survey indicates that another language is spoken in the home or that the student speaks a language other than English, an ELL teacher will screen the student for program eligibility. If their English speaking and listening skills are low, the teacher contacts the family to offer service
s. Services are provided through the Content-based ESL and the English as a Second Language (ESL) research-based models to provide language support to eligible students. Delivery of instruction is by highly qualified ELL teachers and para-educators making programs available at all elementary schools and at Keithley MS and Washington HS.
Whenever possible, students are served by utilizing the academic content as the vehicle for developing language, content, cognitive, and study skills through the content based model. A pullout program for some students at the elementary level focuses on English language acquisition and provides support with academic content by developing vocabulary. Instruction is guided by the English Language Development Standards developed by Washington State in alignment with state EALRs.
